The dinosaur was chosen because it represented the “prehistoric” times before Wi-Fi — a fun nod to the idea of being “disconnected from the modern world.” The team also designed the game in a minimalist, pixel-art style to match the look of early computer graphics. Despite its simplicity, the Dinosaur Game quickly became a cultural icon, inspiring memes, fan art, and even real-life arcade versions.
The rules of the game are as simple as can be. When you lose your internet connection in Chrome, a small dinosaur appears on the “No Internet” page. Press the space bar, and the game begins. The T-Rex starts running automatically, and all you have to do is jump over obstacles by pressing space again, or arrow up, and duck under flying birds using the arrow down key.
The game gets faster and harder the longer you survive, testing your reflexes and timing. Cacti of different sizes and groups start appearing more frequently, and the speed continues to ramp up until your reaction time is truly put to the test. There’s no real ending — it’s an infinite runner game. Your only goal is to survive as long as possible and beat your high score.
Interestingly, if you play long enough, the game transitions from day to night, with the background turning black and the obstacles turning white. This simple detail adds variety and a bit of challenge, as your eyes must adjust to the changing colors while maintaining focus.
